Two plays later, Scott ran mid-line for a long touchdown. Matt looked at me on the sideline and said, ‘You can’t do that. Keep him in at quarterback.’ We never looked back. Tom “TK” Murphy

Inducted Into the Athletic Wall of Fame in 2018

“TK” was Girls Varsity Softball Coach from 1980-2011; He was inducted into the NT Athletic Wall of Fame on September 21, 2018. His impressive list of career accomplishments includes: 553 career wins (most in NYS history); 704 career games (.785 win %); 1988 New York State Girls Softball Champions; Won 14 Niagara Frontier League titles; 9 Section VI titles; 3 Far West Regional titles; the Softball Field on Humphrey Street in North Tonawanda is named in Coach Murphy’s honor. He was also inducted into the New York State Softball Hall of Fame in 2013. As his longtime assistant coach Edgy Skovenski said, “Murph” helped Western New York keep up with the rest of the softball world beginning in the spring of 1980. Murphy, a member of George Vetter’s final NT Football team his senior year and a long-time health teacher at Reszel Junior High, and Skovenski did not know what to expect that first season, and frankly, the decades ahead. “He was a master at studying the game and brought his knowledge to Section VI and our team,” Skovenski said. In his first season, the Lady Jacks had a 15-3 record, but it was in the spring of 1983 when Western New York turned its eyes to the Lumber City. That year, the Lady Jacks recorded their first of 13 20-win seasons under Murphy and won their first league and sectional titles in program history. On that team was his first breakout star, infielder Laura Short. “Coaching NT Softball wasn’t a job for him,” she said. “It was his love. He made all of his players feel like they were part of something special… something bigger.” That season was the beginning of a six-year span where the Lady Jacks were the champs of their league and Section VI, a feat that still has not been matched in Western New York softball to date. But in the last year of that streak, the spring of 1988, Murphy, and the Lady Jacks had their best season in program history. After falling to Union-Endicott the past two years in the Far West Regionals, the Lady Jacks got over the hump and advanced to the state championship game to face Ketcham High School. Leading the way was a senior pitcher, considered to be the best player to come out of the program, named Kim Frizzell. Frizzell pitched a complete game and the Lady Jacks won their only state title to date, 9-0. “When it comes to coaches, Tom Murphy was the epitome of greatness in many ways,” she said. “He not only taught me the game of softball but, more importantly, he taught me about life. He taught me discipline, leadership, how to be a team player and how to be a strong and independent person.” In the early 1990s, Murphy and the Lady Jacks continued their dominance in Western New York as they won three more sectional titles in a four-year span. A major part of those teams was catcher and outfielder Shelly Lis, the first six-year letterman in program history. “Murph was awesome,” the current Georgia Tech head softball coach said. The list of great players over the years goes on and on Jen Sikora to Jen Sarzyniak; Katie Miranto to Shannon Wilson; Jamie Gorczynski to Shaina Bunker; Cindy Garcia to Carrie Shreve. But more importantly, Murphy has built a very close-knit community of alumni.

In her first day of practice, head coach Corey Zayatz knew he had his next top guard. “She was, pound-to-pound, the best overall athlete I ever coached,” he said. For the next four years, the Lady Jacks had a lot of success in the Niagara Frontier League and Miranto became the best player in program history. Today, she is the program leader in scoring with 1,115 points and at one point she held the record for career assists (95). While she also won a pair of NFL titles during her three-year run with NT Volleyball, softball was, and still is, Miranto’s favorite sport. In her senior year, the Lady Jacks defeated Union-Endicott & won the Class A state title over Ketcham High School, 9-0, in which she threw a complete game. The 1988 Lady Jacks softball team was one of the first teams from Section VI to win the state title. “Today, it’s too hard to explain how good she was,” said former NT softball assistant coach Edgy Skovenski. “That’s how dominant she was.” It is likely there will not be another dominating pitcher in Western New York history when you look at her career numbers. In 1995, Brosius was hired as head coach of the Lady Jacks volleyball program. His first move was to call up three young 8th graders who became the nucleus of the program for the next five years: outside hitters Lindsay Matikosh and Brandi Trapasso and setter Breean Trapasso. Along with Brani and Breean’s older sister, Britni, and the depth of fellow underclassmen such as Jen Smith and Katie Sarkovics, the Lady Jacks started their dominance under Brosius as they win the NFL title with a 13-1 record that first season. The following year, the Lady Jacks won another league title. In 1997 after winning the league title for a third consecutive year, Brosius and the Lady Jacks advanced to the Section VI Class A title game. The Lady Jacks won their first Section VI title in program history. After another victory in the state semifinals, Brosius and the Lady Jacks advanced to the state finals to face North Rockland High School of Section I, who ended Sweet Home’s five-year reign as state champs the previous season. North Tonawanda won their first state title… without a senior in the starting lineup. In the 1998 season, the Last Jacks had another memorable match in the Section VI Class A title game when they defeated Sweet Home in five games, thanks to the strong play of Adrienne Welka. “Beating a team like Sweet Home, with the tradition it has, is something that makes this win even sweeter,” Brosius said after the game. The Lady Jacks later defended their state title and went for the three-peat in 1999. With his lineup now consisting of five seniors, Brosius won another league title, then won a 3rd state title. Brosius won 2 more NFL titles in 2000 & 01. His final season was in 2002. Brosius finished with a 133-12 record, 3 NY State titles and 7 NFL titles (107-7 record in league play.)

Matikosh won another league title her freshman year & was selected to the All-NFL team. From 1997 onward, what Matikosh and the entire team did was amazing and likely will not happened again in program history. After defeating Frontier for the Section VI Class, A title, Matikosh and the Lady Jacks defeated North Rockland High School (Section I) to win the school’s first state title, without a single senior in the starting lineup. In 1998, Matikosh defended her Class A title with a victory over Sweet Home, a powerhouse at the time. In 1999, Matikosh won her third consecutive sectional & state titles to cap off an outstanding career. A four-time All-NFL and three-time All-WNY selectee, Matikosh was named the Gatorade high school athlete of the year for New York State in 1999 & finished with over 1,000 kills and digs. Matikosh also had an impressive three-year career in basketball helping lead the Lady Jacks success in the late 1990s under head coach Corey Zayatz, most memorably a victory over Jamestown to advance to the Section VI finals in 1998. “Lindsay was the type of athlete that could have been great at any sport you told her to play,” said Zayatz. “She was just a great kid overall.” Matikosh continued her career at the University at Buffalo and still ranks second all-time in kills (1,450) and digs (1,414) in program history and won two gold medals at the Empire State Games in 2002 and 2003 with the Western Open team. Mike Eberwein
North Tonawanda baseball will forever be associated with the players Stan Rojek (who was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers before the program even existed) and Ricky Brooks. But this man is definitely the coach that will forever be linked to this program. Born in the City of Tonawanda, Eberwein began his teaching career in the NT school district in 1958 and was a part of the high school’s math department for 35 years. In 1963, Eberwein began his coaching career at NT as a swimming coach before beginning his tenure with the baseball program as the head of the freshman team. In 1983, Eberwein was named the skipper of the varsity program and turned North Tonawanda into one of the best teams in Western New York. From 1989 through the spring of 1991, the Lumberjacks were on top of the Niagara Frontier League as “Coach Ebs” led them to a three-peat. Leading the way for the first two titles was catcher Mike Snopkowski. When Eberwein passed away in 2006, just before his 70th birthday, Snopkowski said of his former skipper in his eulogy, “For those of us that had the good fortune of playing for him and getting to know him, we grew to cherish the times that we were all together. In those moments, we were always encouraged to be our best, expected to try our hardest, and most of all, Coach Ebs demanded that we respect each other and ourselves.” In addition to winning league titles, Eberwein and the Jacks found success in the postseason. In 1994, after upsetting the legendary Bob Barrows and the Orchard Park Quakers in the quarterfinals, the Lumberjacks, who came into the postseason with an 8-9 record, won their first Section VI title in over four decades with their victory over Kenmore East. The Lumberjacks finished the season with a 12-10 record after falling to Horseheads High School (Section IV) in the Class A Regionals. Eberwein was able to go out on top when he retired after the 2001 season as the Lumberjacks won another sectional title and advanced to the Class A Far West Regionals before being eliminated by McQuaid, who was ranked 25th in the nation at the time. Leading the team that season was senior pitcher Danny Conaway with a 9-2 record, a 0.32 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 13 appearances. Reflecting back, Conaway says that Eberwein was a player’s coach. “He was very laid back but was great at putting the right people in the right spot,” he said. “His coaching style was a perfect mix of fun and professional. He was always available off the field as well and really cared how we were doing in our personal life. That is one thing I always respected about him.”
